Many worried about Drake Maye suffering an injury when he took over as the New England Patriots’ starting quarterback two weeks ago.

Well, it took until Maye’s third career start to come down with an injury.

Maye sustained a concussion in the final minute of the first quarter of Sunday’s 25-22 win over the New York Jets at Gillette Stadium. The rookie signal-caller took a helmet-to-helmet hit from Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood on a scramble up the field. Maye stayed in the game for four more plays before he exited the contest.

Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo confirmed after the game that Maye is in concussion protocol and he’ll have go to through that process before getting back onto the field.

“I walked in at halftime and saw him. The competitor that he is obviously he wanted to go back out there and play, but there’s a protocol that he has to go through,” Mayo told reporters, per team-provided video. “And again, can’t wait to get him back.”

Maye ran the ball three times in the game with it once resulting in an injury and other time with him finding the end zone. He scored on a 17-yard touchdown run to open the scoring with 5:18 left in the first quarter.

Maye finished with 46 yards rushing while only completing 3-of-6 passes for 23 yards before Jacoby Brissett came on in relief. The rookie signal-caller also took one sack.

All attention will now be on Maye to see how quickly he can progress through the concussion protocol and if he will be available to play when the Patriots take on the Tennessee Titans next week.
