Mike McDaniel Reveals Dolphins’ Starting QB Decision Vs. Patriots

There looked like a chance the Dolphins could give the keys of the offense back to quarterback Skylar Thompson for their game Sunday against the New England Patriots.

But that option isn't on the table for Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel.

McDaniel revealed Tuesday that Thompson is still working his way back from a rib injury and that Miami will roll with Tyler Huntley for the second straight game as it tries to snap a three-game losing streak.

"We're planning on going with Tyler," McDaniel told reporters, per team-provided video. "After reviewing the tape, there's reasons for guys to be excited about that because while the output wasn't nearly what we wanted offensively, there were some things to build upon that we'll keep working through and excited to do that."

It's tough to know exactly what McDaniel is referring to with the Dolphins being outscored 86-25 over the last three games.

Miami's offense didn't look any better under Huntley, who the Dolphins signed off the Baltimore Ravens practice squad following Tua Tagovailoa suffering a concussion in a Week 2 loss to the Buffalo Bills. Huntley completed just 14-of-22 passes for 96 yards and and also ran for 40 yards on eight carries with a touchdown in a 31-12 loss to the lowly Tennessee Titans on Monday night. The Dolphins only accumulated 184 yards of total offense even with dynamic weapons on the outside in Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle.

Huntley, who played four seasons with the Baltimore Ravens before joining the Dolphins, owns a career 3-7 record with a 64.6% completion percentage, 2,053 yards passing, eight touchdowns and seven interceptions. Huntley, 26, does have four career rushing touchdowns.

Thompson did dress for the loss but isn't at full strength as he's dealing with a "laborsome" rib injury. Thompson sustained the injury in his Week 3 start against the Seattle Seahawks. The only other quarterback the Dolphins have on the active roster is Tim Boyle, who has yet to win a start in his six-year NFL career.

This might be the only time for the rest of the season that the Patriots actually have the edge at quarterback going into a game.
