Patriots Setting Low Precedent Prior To NFL Trade Deadline

The New England Patriots sit at 2-6 after eight weeks in the midst of a rebuild and setting the franchise up for the future.

Part of that process may come in the coming days with deals to potentially make for veteran players in New England. The Patriots began that process on Monday when they traded pass-rusher Joshua Uche to the Kansas City Chiefs for a sixth-round draft pick in 2026. Now, Uche’s value was not going to be significant with an expiring contract and limited chances to get after the quarterback on a struggling New England team this season.

Nonetheless, the Patriots probably could have gotten more and instead let a talented player go to the Super Bowl favorites for a minimal return. Whether or not the Patriots could have more moves to make is yet to be seen with just over a week before the deadline.

New England needs to be realistic in pursuing deals to move on from veterans while also weighing which players should be a part of the young future that centers around cornerstones such as quarterback Drake Maye and cornerback Christian Gonzalez.

The NFL trade deadline rolls around on Tuesday, Nov. 5.
