The Red Sox didn’t succeed at first with Teoscar Hernández, but they might be eager to try again.
MLB.com’s Ian Browne on Monday tackled “seven burning questions” for Boston ahead of a very important offseason for the organization. Included were notes about who the Red Sox might target in free agency, and the list included Hernández.
“Teoscar Hernández, the right-handed-hitting outfielder the Red Sox courted last year, will again be a free agent,” Browne wrote. “Particularly if (Tyler) O’Neill departs as a free agent, Hernández would be a perfect fit in Boston.”
The Hernández-Red Sox interest was mutual last winter. Back in July, the veteran outfielder told WEEI’s Rob Bradford that he “loves” Boston and playing at Fenway Park, but he made a decision he felt was in the best interest of his family and his career. The choice proved to be the right one, as Hernández was an All-Star in his first season with the Los Angeles Dodgers and is on the precipice of his first World Series ring.
LA might not be keen on giving the 32-year-old an expensive, long-term deal, though, especially if it plans to make a run at generational free agent Juan Soto. The Red Sox, meanwhile, are in a position to extend an offer to Hernández that could satisfy both sides.
