BOSTON — The Bruins aren’t sticking to any hard-and-fast rules when it comes to incorporating goaltender Jeremy Swayman.
It’s all about feel.
“I think it’s just what we’ve been doing, which is getting him reps in practice and getting him some game action,” Boston head coach Jim Montgomery said Saturday. “… I don’t think we want him playing 65 games, but it’s one of those things where over the course of the year — in discussions with (goaltending coach Bob Essensa) and (general manager Don Sweeney) — we’ll feel it out and come up with a plan to maximize success for the Bruins.”
Swayman, for those of you who have been living under a rock, got a late start this past offseason.
The B’s had a whale of a time coming to terms on a contract extension with the 25-year-old, eventually agreeing on an eight-year pact worth $66 million. Sway didn’t sign that contract until training camp had concluded, though, meaning he had to miss the season-opening loss to the Florida Panthers on Tuesday before returning to earn a win in the home opener against the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday.

Boston doesn’t want to waste too much time, though, which is why he got the nod in back-to-back games to kickstart the feeling out process for both sides.
