Drake Maye looks like a legit franchise quarterback, and it seems like the Patriots’ upper brass wants to ensure there aren’t roadblocks that come his way.

Robert Kraft and Jonathan Kraft looked outside of the organization to seek advice on how to develop Maye, according to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer. That seemed like an odd move for a franchise that overhauled its offensive staff, and it also seems like New England doesn’t fully trust Alex Van Pelt to develop Maye.

The Patriots offensive coordinator addressed that report Friday on WEEI’s “Jones & Keefe.”

“Once again, I don’t read anything or see anything that’s out there in the press. They got a lot invested in the guy,” Van Pelt told Adams Jones and Rich Keefe. “I have a good feel for how to get him ready, and I think it’s shown so far so not worried about that at all. I’m here to develop Drake Maye, and that’s what I’m gonna do.”

When asked if he believes the New England coaching staff needs outside help to develop Maye, Van Pelt said he doesn’t believe so.

Head coach Jerod Mayo and quarterback Drake Maye were among Van Pelt’s most vocal supporters. Despite questions about his play-calling, players continue to praise the first-time offensive coordinator.

It’s not uncommon to seek out advice from outside of your organization, but it is odd to hear ownership doing that and not the coaching staff. It might seem premature given the roster he was given, but Van Pelt’s job security could be something to keep an eye on if the Patriots season ends on a sour note.
