Could Patriots Reunite With Super Bowl Champion After Release?

Any trade the New England Patriots orchestrate before the Nov. 5 deadline would require them to give up something in return.

But the Patriots could add to their roster — and a familiar face at that — in the very near future without having to give up anything.

The Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday announced they released defensive tackle Lawrence Guy. Guy, who is in his 14th season in the NFL, signed a one-year deal worth $1.2 million with the Bengals in free agency after spending seven seasons with the Patriots.

Guy was a respected veteran in the Patriots locker room and a key cog in the defensive line during during his time with the franchise. He played a part in New England winning Super Bowl LIII over the Los Angeles Rams.

But Guy’s production over his last two seasons with New England decreased and he played just 46% of defensive snaps for the Patriots in 2023, which was his lowest mark since joining the team.

There wasn’t much change for Guy this season with the Bengals. He played in four games (two starts) and compiled just two tackles. He appeared in 34% of the team’s defensive snaps.

Guy, who is 34 years old, certainly is well past his prime, but given his familiarity with the Patriots, perhaps they both see a reunion as a possibility.

The veteran defender could bring a leadership presence to the team and aid the Patriots with their abysmal run defense. The Patriots surrender 133.1 yards rushing per game, which is third-worst in the AFC.

The Patriots, who enter Sunday’s matchup with the Tennessee Titans with a 2-6 record, aren’t in a position to buy as the trade deadline approaches. But signing Guy could be a good middle ground as they look to build momentum over the second half of the season.
