The recipient of Drake Maye’s second Week 11 touchdown pass caught just about everyone off guard.
With five wide receivers, three tight ends and three running backs active for the Patriots on Sunday, Maye had a wealth of pass-catching options at his disposal against the Los Angeles Rams. But when New England desperately needed a touchdown early in the fourth quarter, Maye and company went way against the grain.
On a second-and-goal from LA’s 4-yard line, Vederian Lowe declared himself eligible and Sidy Sow entered the fray as an extra offensive lineman/jumbo tight end. After Lowe provided some resistance on talented rookie pass-rusher Jared Verse, the veteran lineman drifted toward the end zone and hauled in a floater from Maye.

The Patriots’ jubilation after the trick play was short-lived, though, as Joey Slye’s extra-point try was blocked and New England’s deficit stood at nine.
