New England Patriots fans and NFL bettors had to be licking their chops once it became clear that it was unlikely for Trevor Lawrence to play Sunday.

It meant there was a golden opportunity to bet against Mac Jones when he makes his first career start for the Jacksonville Jaguars against the Minnesota Vikings.

The New England fan base certainly expects Jones’ first meaningful showing with the Jaguars to go up in flames just like how his tenure with the Patriots ended. Jones spent his final season with the Patriots tossing the ugliest of interceptions and showcasing the mobility of a moose in the pocket before he got benched for the final six games of the campaign.

Now Jones has the unenviable spot of coming in for Lawrence and going up against a swarming Vikings defense which leads the NFL in interceptions with 13 and constantly puts pressure on opposing quarterbacks.

Cue the mistakes for Jones.

FanDuel Sportsbook doesn’t have odds on if Jones will throw an interception but cornerback Bryon Murphy Jr., who owns a team-high three interceptions, is +800 to register a pick. Veteran safety Harrison Smith, who very likely could fool Jones in coverage, is +500 to catch a pass from Jones.

That’s not the only money-making opportunity. Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores loves to send blitzers and Minnesota is +490 to record five-plus sacks. If you think the Vikings will take down Jones more than that then Minnesota getting six-plus sacks at +1100 (!) might be worth it.

Jones threw six pick-sixes in his time with the Patriots and it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Vikings return a Jones pass to the house — don’t rule out a strip sack for a scoop and score, either. FanDuel set +750 odds for the Vikings defense to score at any point in the game.

Jaguars fans will get the chance to witness what the Patriots saw from Jones over three seasons. And this time, Patriots fans get to kick their feet up and relax, and possibly put some money in their pocket at Jones’ expense.
