The Red Sox are big-game hunting this offseason, and they’re not being shy about it.

Team president and CEO Sam Kennedy recently made it clear that Boston was willing to push a lot of chips to the middle of the table in hopes of returning to the playoffs. The Red Sox reportedly are a finalist in the Juan Soto sweepstakes and several reports indicate that they’re one of the biggest players in the starting pitching market.

All things considered, an MLB general manager believes Boston will come away with at least one of the biggest names in free agency.

“They have been so outspoken about their intentions,” the GM told USA Today’s Bob Nightengale. “There’s no way you talk that way unless you’re absolutely sure you’re signing one of those guys. I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see them announce they’ve got one of those guys pretty soon. They’re pretty confident.”

A front-end starter landing in Boston probably is more likely than Soto ending up in a Red Sox uniform. And that would be a fine result for Alex Cora’s group, which features a very competitive offensive lineup but desperately needs a legitimate ace.

Once that box is checked, Boston could continue rounding out its roster with other notable moves.
