The Red Sox might be facing an uphill climb in their effort to sign Juan Soto.

Boston seemingly had a productive meeting with Soto, one of the most coveted free agents in recent Major League Baseball history. But Craig Breslow and company weren’t the only ones to talk shop with the star outfielder last week, and it sounds like one of his other suitors made a very, very strong impression.

According to the New York Post’s Jon Heyman, the Mets’ “very detailed” meeting with Soto on Saturday went “extremely well.” The “big production” in Orange County reportedly strengthened the Mets’ position as one of the favorites to sign the 26-year-old phenom.

Furthermore, Heyman believes the Mets hold “a few edges” over the competition in the Soto sweepstakes. The “biggest edge” appears to be owner Steve Cohen, who has a documented history of pushing the envelope to put together a supremely talented club. While New York has a handful of key internal free agents, such as star first baseman Pete Alsono, the Mets reportedly have “no doubt” about Soto being their clear-cut No. 1 offseason priority.

So, while the Red Sox are in the race to land the four-time All-Star, they might need to get creative in finding ways to separate themselves from the pack.
