NFL Rumors: What Bill Belichick ‘Wants’ In Next Coaching Role

Even after not landing a head-coaching job last NFL offseason, Bill Belichick might not become more flexible with his slate of preferences.

The Atheltic’s Dianna Russini and Lauren Merola on Saturday shared a new report on Belichick, who is looking to return to the sideline next season. A “person close to Belichick” told Russini and Merola that the future Pro Football Hall of Famer has coaching “in his blood” and wants another opportunity after parting ways with the New England Patriots.

However, finding a gig that meets his criteria of an appealing destination might not be easy for Belichick.

“In 24 seasons with the Patriots, Belichick helped deliver six Super Bowl titles, nine conference championships, 17 division crowns and 30 playoff wins,” The Athletic pair wrote. “That prosperity earned Belichick the trust of ownership and gave him the authority to operate with little oversight. He wants as much in his next post, but his past freedoms will be hard to come by.”

Russini and Merola identified the Buffalo Bills and the Philadelphia Eagles as “suitable options” for Belichick, but either team having a head-coaching vacancy after the season is far from a guarantee. The Dallas Cowboys are far more likely to be on the hunt for a new coach, but as The Athletic pointed out, longtime owner Jerry Jones has stressed he won’t hire a general manager and “there’s no way” he will subdue the role of vice president of player personnel Will McClay.

So, don’t be surprised if Belichick works another season in media in 2025.
