The Caleb Williams era in Chicago is off to a disastrous start, and it might have hit rock bottom Sunday with the Bears’ loss to the lowly Patriots.
Chicago turned in yet another anemic offensive showing, scoring just three points. The Bears scored just 27 points over their last three games combined, and major change could be on the way ahead of a brutal stretch in the schedule.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter said Monday on “The Pat McAfee Show” that Chicago is contemplating major changes with the offense, perhaps even benching Williams, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, who has looked brutal lately.
“They have been engaged today in conversations about what it is the best way for them to move forward as a franchise and improve as a franchise,” Schefter said. “I don’t know if they’ve decided on anything right now, I don’t know what they’ll ultimately wind up doing … but I would expect there would be some sort of change in Chicago on the offensive side of the football.
“Is that changing the playcaller? Is that changing the quarterback and benching Caleb Williams for Tyson Bagent? I think all these things are being discussed in the building today.”

Bears coach Matt Eberflus, who almost certainly is on the hot seat himself, held his press conference shortly after Schefter’s hit on McAfee. Eberflus acknowledged change was imminent, but he gave Williams a vote of confidence, insisting the No. 1 pick would keep his job as the starter.
That could be bad news for offensive coordinator Shane Waldron.
And while Williams might keep his job for now, the Bears still have two games apiece against Green Bay, Detroit and Minnesota — a trio that is currently a combined 21-6. Also on the slate are matchups with San Francisco and Seattle.
Theoretically, if things continue to go downhill — the Bears are 4-5 — Chicago could still bench Williams with an eye toward 2025 (and also to protect him). That Schefter is even throwing it out there as an option is telling.
