The Red Sox traveled to MLB Winter Meetings believing they were firmly entrenched in the Juan Soto sweepstakes.

However, those inside the organization reportedly became less optimistic as the hours went by Sunday. Boston reportedly learned Soto’s fate — a 15-year, $765 million deal with the New York Mets — as it sat down for dinner in Dallas on Sunday night.

“It was a pursuit that led the Red Sox to actually believing there might be a chance Soto would be coming to Boston … all the way up until some of the the chief decision-makers in the organization went out to eat Sunday night,” WEEI’s Rob Bradford wrote in a story published Monday.

“But it was at that meal — with Soto’s agent Scott Boras sitting just a few tables away — the Sox got news that they were waking up from this improbable dream.”

MassLive’s Chris Cotillo and Sean McAdam similarly reported the Red Sox became more “pessimistic” throughout the day Sunday. The Athletic reported Boston began to sense its chances fading Saturday after a video conference with Boras.

The Red Sox offered Soto a 15-year, $700 million deal, according to multiple reports. Bradford reported Boston contemplated extending the years to as many as 17.

Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Braig and company now will have to shift gears to the other top-of-market players on the open market. All while the Fenway Faithful are left hoping their next dinner is a celebratory one.
