There hasn’t been a ton of consistency with the Patriots’ captaincy this season.
New England was forced to backfill a pair of captains earlier in the campaign when David Andrews and Ja’Whaun Bentley both went down with season-ending injuries. Jabrill Peppers, meanwhile, had his captaincy revoked due to a legal matter that kept him away from the team for weeks.
And this past Saturday, there appeared to be yet another change to New England’s leadership contingency. Jacoby Brissett noticeably did not have a “C” patch on his jersey when he briefly replaced starting quarterback Drake Maye in the Patriots’ home loss to the Los Angeles Chargers at Gillette Stadium.
But speaking with reporters Monday morning, head coach Jerod Mayo confirmed Brissett still is one of New England’s captains. Mayo did not offer any explanation about why the veteran signal-caller was missing the patch on his jersey, though.
The quick relief appearance against the Bolts very well could have been Brissett’s final game against the Patriots. While New England will consider sitting Maye in Week 18 against the AFC East champion Buffalo Bills, Mayo acknowledged fellow rookie quarterback Joe Milton III could be in line for playing time in the season finale.
