The Boston Red Sox are fighting to hold ground in the biggest sweepstakes of the offseason.
Boston is contending with the New York Mets and the New York Yankees at the top of the list of candidates to sign the 26-year-old. The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal added context just to where those teams are in the race for the slugging outfielder.
“The Mets are widely regarded as the favorite for Soto, with many in the industry believing the team’s owner, Steve Cohen, will top any rival bid,” Rosenthal wrote. “But the Yankees desperately want to keep Soto as a complement to Aaron Judge, and the Red Sox have emerged as a surprising force in the negotiations.”
Rosenthal also mentioned the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Toronto Blue Jays in talks with Soto but considered those teams “longer shots” in the race. The offers for Soto have reached a massive financial level and should create jaw-drops around the league when a potential deal is done. Now, the question ultimately comes down to when will Soto reach his decision and mark the biggest domino to fall this winter. The Red Sox could have a much different expectation in 2025 should he choose them.
Soto’s clock continues to tick before next week’s MLB Winter Meetings in Dallas.
