The Juan Soto sweepstakes originally were projected to be a two-horse race between the New York franchises.

Well, only one of those ballclubs from the Big Apple might have a legitimate shot at signing the free-agent outfielder.

“I think the Mets are definitely in play and the Red Sox are in play,” NJ.com’s Randy Miller said Saturday on WFAN, as transcribed by SNY’s Danny Abriano. “And I don’t think he’s going to the Yankees.”

The Bronx Bombers reportedly made a recent update to their offer to Soto — a sign that panic could be setting in for team brass. The Yankees, according to Miller, also “fear” the Red Sox, who seem to be gaining momentum in the Soto sweepstakes after initially being tabbed as a longshot.

The baseball world might not have to wait much longer for Soto’s decision. The four-time All-Star is expected to pick his team around the start of the MLB Winter Meetings on Dec. 9.
