Corbin Burnes remains on the open market, but not due to lack of interest.
The Toronto Blue Jays and San Francisco Giants continue to be viewed as the favorites to sign Burnes, according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand. The Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles apparently “could work their way into the mix,” as well.
Should the Red Sox want to sign the right-hander after they traded for left-handed Garrett Crochet, it’s not going to come cheap. Burnes is expected to exceed the guaranteed total Max Fried received from the New York Yankees (eight years, $218 million contract).
The latest projection indicated the 30-year-old will land more than $245 million, per Feinsand. Crochet and Burnes certainly would serve a high-end 1-2 punch for the Red Sox.
But then again, Boston could opt to sign a lineup-changing bat like Alex Bregman and/or Teoscar Hernández with that money. Both of whom have been linked to the Red Sox with Hernández reportedly looking for a three-year deal.
