As the NFL season unfolded, the football world speculated where in the league Bill Belichick could take his talents after a campaign off.

One team Belichick wasn’t expected to consider was the Jets. The legendary coach, of course, spurned New York before his iconic New England Patriots tenure and his disdain for Gang Green never seemed to diminish. So, it was very surprising when several reports claimed Belichick inquired about potentially coaching in New York before taking a job with North Carolina.

But even if the 72-year-old didn’t latch on with the Tar Heels, it doesn’t sound like he would’ve ended up in the Meadowlands.

“A source close to Belichick expressed serious doubt about whether he had genuine interest, suggesting it might have been simply due diligence,” ESPN’s Rich Cimini wrote in a column published Saturday. “Belichick evaluated the NFL openings, and potential openings, before accepting the University of North Carolina job, ESPN’s Seth Wickersham reported.”

Belichick heading to Chapel Hill seemingly was an indication that he wasn’t confident in his chances of landing an NFL job this winter. However, reported details of his UNC contract suggest he still has aspirations to return to the professional level.

But if that eventually comes to pass, don’t count on the Jets being the team that pries Belichick from the college ranks.
