The Boston Red Sox made one significant move to improve their starting rotation by acquiring Garrett Crochet from the Chicago White Sox.
Craig Breslow has made clear that pitching remains a priority for Boston. However, he also noted the Red Sox are looking to “balance out the lineup” as well, which would mean signing a right-handed bat.
Power-hitter Teoscar Hernández would fit perfectly in Boston, especially since he has a career slash line of .282/.344/.606 and 14 home runs and 44 RBIs across 44 games he’s played at Fenway Park.
The Athletic’s Jen McCaffrey thinks the Red Sox have a slight edge over the other five teams — New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, Philadelphia Phillies, Kansas City Royals and Los Angeles Dodgers — to sign the slugger.
“There was a lot of interest there last year, but it didn’t happen,” McCaffrey told Ed Hand on the “Pod By The River” podcast on Thursday. “… He’s got a good relationship with a lot of Red Sox people, and he loves Fenway. I don’t want to say 50-50 because that’s probably, like, too boring of an answer, I don’t know. I’ll give it a little bit of an edge and say, like, 60-40.”

While McCaffrey is giving the Red Sox the edge, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said he thinks LA is “close” to re-signing Hernández when he appeared on “The Dodgers Bleed Los Podcast” over the weekend.
