The Red Sox have made it abundantly clear that their top priority this offseason is signing outfielder Juan Soto.

Boston also appears to have a few more irons in the fire, however.

The New York Post’s Jon Heyman discussed a few potential landing spots for St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado on Wednesday, and pointed toward the hometown club as a potential option should he eventually be traded — though it was hardly the only one.

“I expect he will be dealt somewhere,” Heyman said. “I’ll say Yankees, Mets, Boston, Toronto, maybe Seattle, Houston, Detroit, Angels, Dodgers. I’ve got a long list of potential third-base openings.”

Arenado has been linked to Boston on more than a few occasions, and by more than a few different reporters. Heyman joined the likes of USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, MLB Network’s Jon Morosi and MassLive’s Sean McAdam to hypothetically put the 33-year-old in a Red Sox uniform.

Heyman also views Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman as an option for the Red Sox.

Bregman probably makes more sense than Arenado, whose offensive production significantly dipped the last two seasons, would need to be acquired via trade and is owed $52 million over the next three years. Bregman would eventually be more expensive, but he’s younger and excels with the bat and the glove. The two-time World Series champion reportedly is also open to playing second base, where Boston hasn’t been able to find stability.

The Red Sox would have to move Rafael Devers should they make a trade for Arenado, so despite multiple links to the seven-time All-Star, it doesn’t look all that likely.
