The Boston Red Sox are still searching for a right-handed bat, and multiple MLB insiders view this partnership as happening.

Alex Bregman remains the top free agent on the market. The Houston Astros and New York Yankees were viewed as the favorites for the All-Star, but their respective offseason moves put them out of his market.

The Red Sox and Detroit Tigers were heavily linked to Bregman since each manager has a connection to the two-time World Series MVP. There’s been mixed reporting on which team has the edge in the sweepstakes. But The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal this week believed it was only “logical” that Boston locks up the veteran.

MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand on Friday examined the top names in the market and called the Red Sox the “most logical team” to sign Bregman. Boston added Garrett Crochet and Walker Buehler to address rotation concerns. And with Rafael Devers and Triston Casas at each corner infield position, Bregman could play second base; manager Alex Cora told reporters at the MLB winter meetings the Gold Glove infielder is fully capable of playing the position.

The Red Sox could have a small edge as Buehler revealed Friday that he made a pitch to his longtime friend to join him in Boston. However, it will be a wait-and-see for Bregman to decide which team he wants to play for.
