Mike Vrabel reportedly would like to land in the AFC East, but not with the team currently looking for a head coach.

The New York Jets represent the only team in the division which undoubtedly will hire a new head coach this offseason. Those around the league, however, don’t believe Vrabel will sign on to lead Woody Johnson’s circus.

“Mike Vrabel is a popular name among Jets fans as the team’s next head coach, but few in the league believe it will happen,” NFL writer Tony Pauline wrote Tuesday. “The feeling is that Vrabel will use the Jets as leverage to get the job he wants at the salary he wants.”

The job he desires most? That’s head coach of the New England Patriots, according to Pauline.

“Vrabel wants the New England Patriots job, people close to him tell me,” Pauline wrote, “but Robert Kraft seems intent on bringing back Jerod Mayo — at least at present time.”

Mayo will conclude his first season at the helm Sunday. Previous reports stated Mayo is expected to be back, but all have kept the door open that Mayo could be let go. It’s fair to wonder whether New England’s post-bye week stretch has been catastrophic enough to cost Mayo his job.

One way or the other, though, it seems football fans can cross the Jets off the list of landing spots for Vrabel.
