The Red Sox need a right-handed bat and have been linked to an All-Star since the MLB winter meetings.

Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow acknowledged this offseason that a right-handed bat was on his checklist. Multiple reports noted that Boston’s next move after acquiring rotation depth was adding more talent to the lineup.

Alex Bregman is the most popular name linked to the Red Sox, especially after Teoscar Hernández re-signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Bregman has a relationship with Alex Cora and other teams like the Houston Astros and New York Yankees took themselves out of the Gold Glove infielder’s market.

However, recent reports threw cold water on Boston’s chances to sign Bregman with the Detroit Tigers viewed as a contender in his market. The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal thought otherwise.

“Bregman to the Red Sox, to me, is a move that seems very logical,” Rosenthal said on Foul Territory on Thursday.

The MLB insider reiterated that Boston signing Bregman “makes the most sense.” However, he did preface his thoughts when he noted that things always can change as the market lingers. The San Francisco Giants and Toronto Blue Jays reportedly were the favorites to sign the All-Star until the Arizona Diamondbacks locked him up.

Bregman’s market still seems up in the air after the start of the new year. It will be a wait-and-see on when the two-time World Series champion decides which team he wants to play for.
