The Red Sox are looking for a high-impact right-handed bat, and there’s one readily available on the open market.
Alex Bregman’s free agency, to the surprise of some, drifted into the new year. Bregman has been attached to Boston in rumors since the start of the MLB offseason, partly due to the star third baseman’s history with manager Alex Cora. The two-time World Series champion also could help shore up the Red Sox’s infield defense and provide veteran leadership in the clubhouse.
But while Bregman taking his talents to Boston would make sense in some regards, the New York Post’s Jon Heyman no longer is bullish on the hypothetical pairing.
“I think the Red Sox are an outside possibility at this point,” Heyman said Wednesday on a Bleacher Report live stream. “I don’t think it’s as strong as it was previously.”
Bregman reportedly is looking for a very expensive long-term contract, which the Red Sox might not view as a practical measure as they carry on with their youth movement. Boston also seems committed to Rafael Devers at third base, and while Bregman is open to changing positions, staying at the hot corner might be his preference.

So, we probably shouldn’t expect Bregman to become a regular at Fenway Park. Heyman identified the Detroit Tigers and the Toronto Blue Jays as likelier landing spots for the two-time All-Star, who turns 31 in late March.
