The Red Sox could use a right-handed power bat and could seek one out in the trade market.
One of the most popular trade targets of the offseason is Nolan Arenado. The St. Louis Cardinals reportedly are willing to trade the Gold Glove third baseman, who would waive his no-trade clause for Boston.
However, similar to Alex Bregman’s market, there hasn’t been much action for Arenado. That isn’t expected to change, according to one MLB insider.
“The chances continue to increase that by the time the Cardinals arrive to spring training in Jupiter, Fla., Arenado will still be a member of the St. Louis Cardinals,” Jon Morosi said on MLB Network’s “Hot Stove” on Wednesday.
Morosi cited Arenado’s contract as the main deterrent to teams trading for him. The 33-year-old is owed $74 million for the next three seasons. Also, his offensive production declined last year, so there might be concern over that aspect of his game, too.

Another problem Arenado might be facing is that his market is tied to Bregman’s. A team might view the Cardinals star as a backup plan, so he might have to wait a while if he wants out of St. Louis.
There have been fewer reports linking the Red Sox to Arenado, but things always could change as spring training draws nearer.
