The Patriots will interview two of the most popular coaching candidates this week, and a relationship with Eliot Wolf will be key.
Robert Kraft defended retaining the executive vice president of player personnel and the rest of the front office after firing Jerod Mayo. There are questions regarding what role Wolf will have as New England ownership reportedly wouldn’t be against changes if a new head coach wanted it. However, the 42-year-old will stay on in some capacity.
It will be something to keep an eye on as Mike Vrabel and Ben Johnson go through the interview process. Johnson has particular wants and needs for a prospective head coaching job, and an NFL insider believes Wolf could be a benefit for the Patriots.
“It’s become clear that synergy with the general manager and internal alignment will be important to Johnson, and executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf is someone who could get along with Johnson. I could see that pairing working,” ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler wrote Thursday.
Patriots fans had mixed feelings seeing the franchise retain Wolf. New England’s free agent signings weren’t impressive and the draft wasn’t much better outside of Drake Maye. However, it seems like Kraft is banking on an improvement in another offseason with a different head coach.
