One way or another, the Patriots coaching staff figures to look different next season.
The greatest uncertainty on that front is whether Jerod Mayo will return for another campaign as head coach. Mayo obviously entered the season with tremendous support from ownership, but a disastrous end to the campaign might have the former linebacker on the hot seat.
If Mayo manages to keep his job, that doesn’t necessarily mean his assistants will experience the same fate.
“Jerod Mayo, here’s the one that people inside the building really have a question mark about,” NFL insider Jay Glazer said Sunday on FOX. “They’re scratching their heads about what’s going to happen there. I know even if he comes back, there are going to be changes over on that staff.”
It’s unclear what coaching changes Patriots brass could be looking to make outside of Mayo. Alex Van Pelt and DeMarcus Covington both deserve to have their employment evaluated, but the former probably has a leg to stand on after a great rookie run by Drake Maye. All position coaches could be under a microscope after such a terrible season, too.

Staff changes apparently wouldn’t surprise those at One Patriot Place either. According to one franchise legend, coaches entered Week 18 unsure if they will be back next season.
