The New England Patriots made an aggressive decision for the future of the franchise.
New England fired Jerod Mayo after just one season with poor results in a 4-13 record. The Patriots made the decision in need of an immediate upgrade to maximize Drake Maye’s future and expedite the rebuild.
Mike Vrabel’s name continues to dominate the freshly-openly job vacancy in New England for obvious reasons. With plenty of teams hot on the trail, NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport shared just how the Patriots factor into the race for Vrabel.
“He had the choice of several different places,” Rapoport shared Sunday evening on NFL Network. “He chose the Jets, the Patriots’ rival, first. Two days later, the Patriots, knowing he is available with a good feeling there between Vrabel and the organization still exists, they fire Jerod Mayo.”
Rapoport found it hard to believe the Patriots would quickly fire Mayo without the internal belief of a “realistic possibility” to get an upgrade like Vrabel. The NFL insider labeled the Mayo firing “relatively stunning” which amplifies the seriousness of their upcoming pursuit.
