The Patriots’ head coaching position isn’t officially open, but those around the NFL are keeping a keen eye on the situation.
Jerod Mayo might be coaching for his job this Sunday. Multiple reports are mixed on how safe the 38-year-old’s job security is, but New England fans made their voices heard last Saturday, which irked many players, including Jahlani Tavai.
If Mayo did get fired, the position would be highly sought after. The Patriots will have the most cap space and possibly the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. They also have a key advantage that appeals to outsiders.
“The Patriots’ head-coaching job isn’t officially open, but it’s definitely on the radar for people around the league,” The Athletic’s Dianna Russini wrote Saturday. “I’d go as far as to say it’s the job a lot of coaching candidates are eyeing. Why? Drake Maye.”
The NFL insider added that she spoke to three general managers who believed Maye would go No. 1 overall if he entered the 2025 draft.

One thing Patriots fans might agree on is that Maye is a legit franchise quarterback. That’s part of the frustration with the coaching staff this season as they do not want to see the rookie’s development hindered.
Again, it’s not clear what will happen to Mayo or the rest of the coaching staff after the season. Those questions could be answered depending on the result of Sunday’s matchup against the Buffalo Bills.
