Alex Bregman Provides This Underrated Trait To Red Sox Clubhouse

Boston's top prospects could benefit from Bregman's presence

Alex Bregman reportedly is on his way to the Red Sox, and he’ll give them a lot more than just a right-handed bat.

Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said last week that he wanted to add a “difference-maker” to the lineup. Boston did that when it agreed to a three-year, $120 million contract with Bregman, according to multiple reports.

The two-time World Series champion elevates Boston’s ceiling and gives it multiple lineup combinations. But former Red Sox infielder and NESN analyst Lou Merloni explained the true value Bregman brings to the clubhouse.

“We’ve been harping on that: the adult in the room,” Merloni told Tom Caron on the “310 To Left” podcast. “I know at Fan Fest, Sam Kennedy was talking about what Raffy Devers and Trevor Story bring, but the reality is I don’t know if Devers is that guy that just sits around and talks. I think Story is, but he just hasn’t been around the last couple years. What you’ve done is you added a guy now that sits around with these young players, even in camp with the ‘Big Three,’ and he just asks questions, ‘Why do you do this? What are you thinking about? This pitcher, what do you think he’s going to do?’ Those conversations are huge. Yes, you have hitting coaches, but it’s so much better when it comes from a peer. And that’s exactly what Alex Bregman brings.”

Devers and Story still have important roles with the Red Sox, but adding Bregman shifts the dynamic of the club and will help them achieve their goals.
