Alex Cora has an extremely close relationship with Alex Bregman.
The Red Sox committed a small fortune to the latter on Saturday, and although it isn’t solely based on that relationship, there’s no doubt that it played a huge role. Cora spent a year coaching Bregman with the Houston Astros in 2017, and the two are intrinsically linked forever due to the outcome of that season — which the former has always been extremely open about.
Boston will be where the next chapter of that relationship develops, and Cora already believes his new leader will provide quite the difference as the organization looks to get back toward contention.
“It’s not only execution, it’s what happens in the clubhouse, watching video, the communication factor,” Cora said on Saturday, as seen on NESN. “… We had a great conversation last night. I had dinner with him and Trevor (Story). We could have been at the restaurant for five hours talking about baseball.
“(Bregman) made a point of staying late, watching (Kristian Campbell, Marcelo Mayer and Nick Sogard) take grounders. He already had pointers for Campbell, like, ‘Take it easy kid.’ He’s into it. He wants to win, because it’s all he knows… I’m very happy that we have him.”

Bregman and Story will hope to develop a similarly close relationship, as they’ll play alongside each other for the foreseeable future, with perhaps the perfect coach helping guide them through the process of developing an infield rapport.
The Red Sox will hold a news conference Sunday at 8:30 a.m. ET at Fenway South.
Bregman, his agent Scott Boras, team president Sam Kennedy, chief baseball officer Craig Breslow and Cora will be available to the media. You can check out the news conference on NESN and NESN 360 — with more updates throughout spring training on “310 To Left.”
