Vladimir Guerrero Jr. effectively punched his ticket to MLB free agency Tuesday, and he might already have an idea of where he’d like to play next.

Guerrero and the Toronto Blue Jays did not reach an agreement on a contract extension by Monday night, and the star slugger reportedly doesn’t plan to negotiate a new deal in-season. So, Guerrero all but surely will hit the open market after the 2025 season, and Boston reportedly could greatly appeal to him at that juncture.

“It’s no secret that Vladimir Guerrero (Jr.) has told friends that if he hits free agency, he’d love to play for the Boston Red Sox,” USA Today’s Bob Nightengale posted to X on Tuesday morning. “Free agency begins in eight and a half months as Guerrero officially enters spring without a contract extension.”

Nightengale first reported on Guerrero’s fondness for Boston in early January, so it’s noteworthy that those feelings reportedly have not changed. And shortly after Guerrero revealed his stalemate with the Jays, the New York Post’s Jon Heyman identified the Red Sox as the early favorite to sign the four-time All-Star next winter.

Of course, a lot can change between mid-February and early November. For instance, Guerrero could become a major trade deadline target if Toronto flounders over the first three-plus months of the season. But the 25-year-old appears motivated to see what’s out there, and the Red Sox might have a leg up on the competition once the bidding begins.
