Bill Belichick enters uncharted territory as North Carolina head coach, including parts of his business being made public.

The former New England Patriots head coach is set to coach college football for the first time in his career. North Carolina is a public institution, which means emails sent and received on school accounts fall within the scope of the relevant open records laws.

Matt Hartman of TheAssemblyNC.com obtained emails from Belichick to North Carolina officials directing them to copy his girlfriend Jordon Hudson on certain messages sent to him, per Pro Football Talk. The copy of the specific email Hartman posted focused on “social media and web content.” However, Hartman added that she was copied on other emails, including whether to accept interview requests.

Mike Florio pointed out that there is nothing necessarily wrong with Belichick’s directive. It did highlight how involved Hudson is in Belichick’s life and business. That reportedly was the case with NFL Films and part of why UNC was rejected from the next season of “Hard Knocks: Offseason.”

Florio also pointed out how contradictory this directive is compared to Belichick’s mantra of “do your job” and “no distractions.” Hudson’s presence in football circles might have altereted perceptions about the 72-year-old.

“And while no one in league circles is openly mocking Belichick yet, there are plenty of private utterances the go something like this: ‘What the hell has happened to Bill?'” Florio wrote.
