The Boston Celtics ownership group agreed to sell the team Thursday.

According to The Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach, the Celtics’ ownership group agreed to sell the team to William Chisholm, managing director and co-founder of Symphony Technology Group. ESPN’s Shams Charania added that the franchise was sold for a valuation of $6.1 billion.

That would make it the largest sale for a North American sports franchise.

The reported sale will be reviewed by the NBA Board of Governors and is expected to be finalized in late June or early July.

Chisholm is a Dartmouth graduate who grew up in Georgetown, Mass., and is a longtime Celtics fan. Symphony Technology Group is a California-based private equity firm.

The Friedkin Group, Philadelphia Phillies minority owner Stan Middleman and current Celtics co-owner Steve Pagliuca reportedly were the other finalists to buy the Celtics.

The Celtics announced last July that the Grousbeck family intended to sell 51% of the team in late 2024 or early 2025. Co-owner Wyc Grousbeck is expected to remain governor through the ownership transition.

The Grousbeck family, who purchased the team for $360 million in 2002, is selling the team for estate and family planning considerations.
