Drake Maye gained a lot of fans over the course of his first season with the Patriots, but there are some out there who were very high on the young quarterback long before he arrived in New England.

One of those longtime supporters is Josh Gordon, who spent parts of two seasons in Foxboro, Mass. In a recent interview with Casino Beats, Gordon revealed he’s been watching Maye since the 22-year-old’s North Carolina days and actually reached out to the signal-caller “a couple times” before he was drafted third overall last week.

Gordon also pulled back the curtain on those messages to Maye.

“It was just on Instagram. You just see that follow back (icon), I was like, ‘Oh, I didn’t even know he followed me.’ I’m like, ‘Look, bro, I like your game too,'” Gordon told Casino Beats. “And sure enough, years later, he ended up getting drafted to the Patriots. I was like, ‘This guy’s a dawg and I knew it back then.’ Drake Maye, they’ve got a gem over there. He’s going to do some special things for them.”

Maye certainly wasted no time making an impact in New England. His Pro Bowl rookie season — which didn’t even start until Week 6 — dramatically shifted the Patriots’ outlook and influenced how the organization handled the offseason. There’s legitimate optimism in New England following a string of terrible seasons, and Maye is a major reason why.

Expectations will be high for Maye as an NFL sophomore, but he’s given no reason to believe he won’t live up to them.
