The New England Patriots haven’t had a top receiver in years. It looks like they finally have one.

The Patriots and free agent wideout Stefon Diggs on Tuesday agreed to a three-year deal worth $69 million with $26 million guaranteed, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.

Diggs visited with New England last week, and that connection ultimately led to a reported deal. The talented wideout tore his ACL with the Houston Texans last season but appears ahead of schedule in his recovery. His production with Houston, the Buffalo Bills and the Minnesota Vikings speaks for itself, and his next chance to produce comes in New England.

Whether or not he’s still a true No. 1 receiver will be seen this season, but Diggs is undoubtedly the most talented wideout the Patriots have had in years. Drake Maye now gets a top target to work with in a hopeful step forward with offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and head coach Mike Vrabel.

New England defenders also will be glad to no longer guard Diggs in game action, as he tallied 61 catches for 779 yards and eight touchdowns in his career against the Patriots.

The Patriots met the challenge and now crossed another need off their offseason checklist, with this one having spanned for numerous offseasons this decade.
