The Patriots hosted a special guest for a two-day visit last week.

Stefon Diggs was in New England for his first known in-person meeting of the NFL offseason. Diggs arguably is the best wideout available on the open market, and the Patriots still need to vastly improve their receiving corps before Drake Maye’s sophomore season.

Details about Diggs’ trip were limited upon the news breaking, but executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf opened up about it a bit Sunday when New England held a pre-draft party for season-ticket holders.

“Stefon, obviously, a really good player. he was coming off an injury last year, so it was something we wanted to take a look and see where that was at,” Wolf said, per MassLive’s Karen Guregian. “His agents, Adisa Bakari, Jeff Whitney, great guys, they do a great job.

“So, they’re people we always stay in contact with him, and other players.”

The Patriots understandably wanted to take a closer look at Diggs’ surgically repaired knee, which sustained a torn ACL last October. That would be proper due diligence on any skill-position player, but especially one who will turn 32 years old two months into the upcoming season.

Diggs, who left Foxboro, Mass., without a deal, reportedly is “ahead of schedule” in his rehab. Time will tell if the Patriots feel comfortable enough with the four-time Pro Bowl selection’s status to make him an offer.
