Marcelo Mayer will have to remain patient as he waits to live out his dream of playing in the big leagues.

Mayer on Sunday was informed he will start the 2025 season in Triple-A Worcester, per MassLive’s Chris Cotillo. The 22-year-old was in contention to win the Red Sox’s Opening Day second baseman job, which reportedly was claimed by fellow top prospect Kristian Campbell.

The fourth overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft, Mayer last week expressed belief that he was ready to play at baseball’s highest level. Boston very well might feel the same way, but there currently is not a spot available to Mayer on Alex Cora’s roster, which was significantly improved over the offseason. Campbell is set to share an infield with accomplished veterans Alex Bregman and Trevor Story while Triston Casas holds down first base.

However, this isn’t to say Mayer won’t make his MLB debut at some point this season. Injuries and other events that force roster changes happen, and the overall performance Mayer displayed in Fort Myers, Fla., this spring training could force him into consideration for Cora and company if the Red Sox ever need to utilize their depth.

But for now, Mayer will look to stay sharp and hone his crafts in the minors. He’ll be supporting from afar Thursday when Boston kicks off its regular season in Texas.
