The Boston Red Sox will rely on several veteran relievers in high-leverage situations out of the bullpen to begin the 2025 season.

Aroldis Chapman likely takes closing duties with Liam Hendriks slotting in as a setup man alongside Justin Slaten. Justin Wilson also adds another left-hander to the group with veteran experience. A number of younger options will fill in middle-relief roles. There’s potential there but also plenty of uncertainty early in the season.

That makes the bullpen return of Garrett Whitlock that much more important for the Red Sox.

Boston finally made the decision this offseason to have Whitlock pitch out of the bullpen again after three years of injuries and failed stints as a starting pitcher. His first and best season as a starter for the Red Sox came back in 2021, which included recording the final out of the American League Wild Card Game against the New York Yankees.

Whitlock posted a 4.29 ERA as a starter compared to his excellent 2.65 ERA as a reliever. He can reset the bullpen with multi-inning outings and be a consistent leverage option to get the opposition’s best hitters out for Alex Cora. The Red Sox had their last playoff appearance with Whitlock in the bullpen. There’s a real chance for them to return to October baseball this year.

His ability to rest other arms, particularly the leverage veterans with plenty of miles on their MLB careers, is crucial to early season bullpen help for the Red Sox. That relief weapon will be an X-Factor all season long provided Whitlock stays healthy.
