Before the Boston Red Sox defeated the St. Louis Cardinals in their home opener Friday at Fenway Park, manager Alex Cora expressed how much fans will love watching Alex Bregman play at the historic ballpark.

Bregman not only delivered in his Fenway debut, but it came during his first at-bat.

He laced a double to left field, plating Jarren Duran and moving Rafael Devers to third to give Boston an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The moment was electric, and the Red Sox fans loved it as much as the third baseman himself.

“Oh, it felt great,” Bregman told reporters after the win. “Just to kind of see the offense, put together back-to-back at-bats and just pass the torch. It was really good to get off to that start here.

“The place was rocking today. It was a lot of fun. All the guys had a blast, and I’m looking forward to continuing it.”

The 31-year-old right-handed hitter had his choice of suitors in the offseason but ultimately chose the Red Sox because he not only felt he has an opportunity to win in Boston, but the city expects it. Bregman understands how passionate Red Sox fans are about their team and enjoyed hearing the cheers for the first time wearing the Boston uniform.

“It was really cool,” he said. “Playing here, how much of a home-field advantage the Red Sox have because of their fans. To be here, playing for this organization now, it’s a lot of fun, and I don’t take it for granted. It’s an honor to be here, and I’m looking forward to continuing to compete.”

Now that the home opener is in the rearview mirror, Bregman is looking forward to getting into the day-to-day grind of the season.

“I think they always say hitting is contagious. I think for us, it’s just settling into the season and getting some good pitches to hit,” Bregman said. “Obviously, everyone is fired up about this year. We feel like we have a really good team.

“Now, it’s time to slow it down, get into the rhythm of the season, put together good at-bats, and execute. I think we’ve done a better job of that the last few days and look forward to continuing to do that.”

Bregman continued: “I feel like this team wants to win here at home for sure. We want to win when we’re playing here at Fenway. We’re going to leave it all out there every single time we take the field.”
