Connor Wong and the Red Sox aren’t totally in the clear, but they also appear to have dodged a bullet.
Wong injured his finger badly enough Monday night to land on the injured list. Boston initially attached a 10-day IL designation to the veteran catcher, but he’s expected to be sidelined for longer than that allotment due to a left fifth finger fracture.
However, as manager Alex Cora explained before Tuesday night’s loss to the Toronto Blue Jays, Wong’s situation could have been much, much worse.
“It’s a fracture so we’ll take a look on a weekly basis. It’s a very small one,” Cora told reporters, per MassLive. “The hand specialist was explaining to me that it’s the best-case scenario, so hopefully he’ll be back with us sooner rather than later.”
Carlos Narváez, who started four of Boston’s first 11 games when Wong was fully healthy, will serve as the club’s primary catcher while his position mate is sidelined. Blake Sabol, who already was on the Red Sox’s 40-man roster, was promoted from Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday in a corresponding move to Wong landing on the IL.

It’s obviously not an ideal scenario for Cora and company behind the dish, but the Red Sox are positioned to not be too burdened by Wong’s absence.
