Alex Ovechkin made hockey history Sunday, scoring his 895th career goal to break Wayne Gretzky’s longstanding all-time NHL record.
The second-period tally was textbook Ovi, as the Washington Capitals superstar unleashed an absolute rocket past New York Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin.

Ovechkin tied the all-time goals mark Friday night and had one request for the impending record-setter.

“I don’t want an empty net,” Ovechkin said.
Problem solved.
Gretzky, who broke Gordie Howe’s all-time NHL goals record 31 years ago, was in attendance Sunday at UBS Arena. The game was stopped to celebrate Ovechkin’s amazing accomplishment.
