Jarren Duran made a courageous decision to share a personal anecdote that included a suicide attempt in 2022 in the new Netflix docuseries. The Boston Red Sox outfielder’s decision is already making an impact.
Samaritans, a suicide prevention service, reported that calls and texts for support tripled after the early leak of Duran’s story in the series. The Red Sox outfielder survived to embrace his story and elevate his talent at the MLB level. His accolades speak for themselves, but his greatest impact could be inspiring others.
“It means a lot,” Duran told reporters Tuesday, per NESN video. “That was the whole purpose of me sharing. It’s not easy to talk about, but I really thought deep down that if I could help at least one person, it was going to be meaningful. To hear that is awesome. I hope I can inspire people to talk about it more.”
“I’ve definitely reached out a lot more than I used to,” Duran added. “That’s the big thing for me. Even when I tell myself I’m not going to bother someone with it, I go back to stuff I’ve journaled before that told me, ‘Hey, if you ever get in this headspace again, make sure to reach out.’ Just kind of reminding myself that it’s important to reach out. Knowing that other people are reaching out because I talked about it is really heartwarming. I hope that I can help spread the love that people need and support each other.”
The Netflix series spans eight episodes with Duran’s admission in Episode 4. The 2025 Red Sox continue their series with the Toronto Blue Jays Tuesday night on NESN.
