The contract extension for Kristian Campbell should be a reminder that Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer aren’t far behind for the Boston Red Sox.

Anthony jumped right back to Triple-A Worcester to start the season with a two-homer game in the opening series against the Syracuse Mets. His true power and enhanced professional experience have him ready for a call-up with the Red Sox sooner rather than later.

MLB Pipeline’s Jonathan Mayo validated that growth and believes Anthony’s jump to the show is just around the corner for the Red Sox.

“He’s going to keep mashing and make it very difficult for the Red Sox to decide what to do,” Mayo shared on “MLB Central” Friday. “For him, it’s just going to be a matter of opportunity and need at the big-league level. I think he’s already shown that he can handle pitching at the very highest level. It’s a question of when and not if and who’s going to play at the big-league level.”

Anthony and Mayer both had worthy spring trainings to join Campbell with the Red Sox in the coming weeks.
