Alex Cora teased at least one Red Sox roster move Monday night, but Boston made a few transactions official Tuesday afternoon.
As Cora anticipated following his team’s loss to the Toronto Blue Jays, Connor Wong landed on the injured list due to a finger issue. The official designation added clarity to both the catcher’s timeline for return and the injury itself, as Wong is set to serve a 10-day stint on the IL due to a left fifth finger fracture.
Boston recalled catcher Blake Sabol from Triple-A Worcester to serve as a new platoon mate for Carlos Narváez in Wong’s absence. Joining Sabol on the trip from Worcester to Boston was right-hander Josh Winckowski, who pitched in a combined 115 games for the Red Sox the last three seasons. Winckowski will take a bullpen spot from Robert Stock, who was designated for assignment one day after his contract was selected by Boston.
As a result of that series of moves, the Red Sox had one open spot on their 40-man roster.
Time will tell how Boston fills out that spot. In the meantime, Cora’s side will try to return to the win column Tuesday night when they match up again with the Toronto Blue Jays. NESN’s complete coverage of the American League East clash begins at 5:30 p.m. ET.
