The Boston Red Sox will test their depth at another position early this season as starting catcher Connor Wong heads to the injured list with a finger fracture.

Blake Sabol earned the call from Triple-A Worcester to support current backup Carlos Narvaez, who should take the majority of the reps during Wong’s absence.

His performance for the Red Sox so far should leave Boston comfortable with the position in the coming weeks. The offseason addition from the New York Yankees quickly made an impact on both sides of the baseball in his first starts of the season.

Narvaez slashed .333/.455/.500 for a .955 OPS in six games to start 2025. He drew four walks as well, which Alex Cora marveled at his ability to control the strike zone and support the physicality and defense he brings with his profile. He found himself in the middle of the action during Friday’s home opener at Fenway Park and just keeps posting quality at-bats when his number is called.

Cora originally planned on Narvaez playing twice a week, which will obviously increase given the injury to Wong. Narvaez earned the chance to impact the Red Sox and boost the offense out of the catcher’s spot.
