Josh McDaniels engineered multiple championship teams as the offensive coordinator of the New England Patriots.

He’s still rarely had a pass-catching talent like Stefon Diggs, who the Patriots signed last month, to operate with in New England. Yes, McDaniels had two seasons with Randy Moss and led unique talents in Julian Edelman and Rob Gronkowski to success with Tom Brady.

But from a pure ability standpoint, especially in recent years, Diggs is unlike a weapon McDaniels has had in his system with the Patriots in quite some time, even with Diggs entering his age-32 season. That’s a legitimate upgrade to have as McDaniels enters his third stint with the Patriots.

“Stef is a unique individual, unique player, got a really good skillset,” McDaniels told reporters Thursday, per CLNS Media. “My brother had an opportunity to coach him last year in Houston so I have a little bit of insight of what he’s like day-to-day and I’m really excited about having him here.”

Diggs recorded six consecutive 1,000-yard seasons and appeared on pace to make it seven straight in 2024 before a torn ACL in Week 8 brought his season to a close. It’s not crazy to think he could restart that streak with New England as the far-and-away best target for Drake Maye and the Patriots in the passing game.
