Alex Cora is keeping the door ajar for Rafael Devers to put his glove back on at some point this season.

The idea of Devers taking over at first base was born last weekend when Triston Casas went down with a season-ending knee injury. Cora quickly shut down the hypothetical, and he doubled down on his stance Tuesday when he revealed he hadn’t spoken to Devers about the idea and also didn’t have any plan to.

But as he spoke with “WEEI Afternoons” on Wednesday, Cora didn’t rule out the possibility of broaching the topic to the three-time All-Star at some point down the road.

“I’m not saying we’ll never have that conversation,” Cora said. “But for now, where we’re at, I like Raffy as a DH. I like him as my DH. You take away the first weekend of the season, he’s been one of the best hitters in the big leagues and he’s doing an outstanding job.”

While Devers moving to first base immediately might sound like a great idea to some Boston fans, Cora’s approach to the situation probably is the right one. The Red Sox already tasked the 28-year-old to change positions after almost a decade at third base, and presenting that same challenge after Devers finally got comfortable at DH could lead to troubling results.

For now, Boston can continue to see what it has in the likes of Romy González and Abraham Toro. And if neither of those options work out, the Red Sox could pluck from their robust farm system or use some of those appealing prospects to acquire outside help.
