Boston Red Sox right fielder Wilyer Abreu makes the play 99 out of 100 times.
The one time he didn’t occurred Thursday night and proved costly in a stinging 4-2 defeat to the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre.
Abreu looked to have a beat on a warning track fly ball off the bat of Bo Bichette with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning. But a backpedaling Abreu couldn’t come up with the catch as he tumbled to the turf and Bichette hustled in with a double.
It was a play the Gold Glover admitted he should have made.
“It was a routine fly. It was bad read on my part,” Abreu said through translator Carlos Villoria-Benítez, per NESN.

One batter after Abreu’s misplay, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. took Red Sox reliever Justin Slaten deep for a three-run home run, which gave the Blue Jays their decisive two-run lead.
It was the the second straight night the Red Sox suffered a deflating loss. Boston blew a six-run lead Wednesday night and were up 2-0 after six innings Thursday before spoiling a strong start from Tanner Houck.
Abreu didn’t let himself off the hook for the role he played in a loss that made sure Boston’s road trip ended on a sour note.

“Obviously when you have the lead for most of the game and you end up on the losing side, obviously, it’s very difficult,” Abreu said. “On my part, that error is unacceptable and I’m going to make sure that doesn’t happen again.”
